On the hunt for Moose

Posted on 12th June 2015

Another road trip, this time to Algonquin National Park, looking for Moose, watching for cars looking for Moose, on the HWY 60 corridor through the park in Ontario Canada. The moose have a salt deficiency through the winter and its not as if they can go to the local cafe for a meal with lots of salt, so they take advantage of the fact the roads are salted in winter. The salt gathers off the sides of the highway and provides a sodium enriched diet in the spring for the moose. This gives you the opportunity in May through June to observe and picture these massive animals at close range along the Hwy 60 corridor.

Below is one example of the images we took of the Moose.

However, you have to put up with the black flies and the mosquitos which are vicious and relentless. Deet will give you some protection but they are all over you in 30 seconds. We have the lumps and scars to prove it.

We found that a zoom lens in the range 75-300mm was more than sufficient to get good frame filling images.

I will put more images in the portfolio for you to look at.
